What are shortfills?

It’s very simple - shortfills are simply larger bottles of nicotine-free e-liquid. They are underfilled (shortfilled) purposefully, so you can add a nicotine shot (also known as a nic shot) to make an e-liquid. It’s possible to add more or less nicotine to make a final e-liquid that meets your needs for strength.

A shortfill is typically a 60ml bottle with 50ml of e-liquid and a 10ml gap for a nic shot to be added later. Don’t confuse it with a longfill; that is an entirely different product.

As a product, the shortfill emerged because of EU’s TPD directive, implemented in 2016. This directive restricted EU businesses from selling bottles of e-liquids with nicotine that have more volume than 10 ml. To remain compliant but still offer the best experience for vapers across the EU, manufacturers began making shortfill juice and sold nic shots separately.

How do shortfills work?

The principle is elementary. Shortfills are bottles that are underfilled and have space for nicotine to be added later. Nicotine-free e-liquid is perfect for customisation and making every vaping experience more personal. The primary advantages of shortfills are:

  1. Personalisation - vapers can control the nicotine concentration in their bottle, making the final mixture milder or stronger
  2. Great price – overall, buying larger volumes of e-liquid can be more economical than buying smaller bottles. The price of a larger 50ml or 100 ml shortfill juice is much better if you calculate the price per litre or 100 ml.
  3. Convenient – if you have a larger bottle and know how to use shortfills, you can have flavourful e-liquid ready for a long time. This is especially important for sub-ohm vapers as they consume more e-liquid.

Remember that DOOZY, ICE BAR, IVG, and other shortfill producers make them with a higher vegetable glycerine (VG) content. Why? Primarily because such composition allows for denser vapour clouds. Fun. Also, a thicker liquid provides a smoother inhaling experience. High VG levels also enhance flavour delivery, so vaping becomes an even better experience. Such chemical structure is also better optimised for sub-ohm vapes, which consume more power and have no problem handling thicker liquids.

Vapers using MTL (mouth-to-lung) devices or those who are just thinking about how to turn their shortfill juice into high-powered nicotine liquid might find traditional 10ml nicotine-containing e-liquids more appropriate. Shortfills are often preferred for the better taste.

How to use shortfills?

If you know exactly how do shortfills work and what they are, as a self-respecting vaper, you should also learn how to use them the right way. It’s actually a straightforward process.

  1. Pick Your Nicotine Shot. Nicotine shots are typically sold in 10ml bottles. It is a flavourless e-liquid with a high concentration of nicotine. Often, it reaches 18 milligrams per millilitre. PRO TIP: pick a nic shot that complements your base e-liquid’s VG/PG ratio to avoid messing up the consistency of the liquid.
  2. Calculate How Much Nicotine You Want to Add. Every vaper needs to understand how much nicotine is required in order to achieve the desired strength of the final liquid. For example, a single 10ml 18mg/ml nic shot to a 50ml shortfill will get you a solid 60ml of e-liquid with a reasonably mild 3mg/ml final nicotine concentration. Even if you want more punch, adding extra nicotine isn’t always the answer as too much of it will just dilute the flavour. Be cautious.
  3. Pour the Nicotine Shot. This is self-explanatory but if your shortfill bottle won’t have enough space to accommodate the entire shot, just remove some of the base e-liquid before pouring the nic.
  4. Mix it Up. Once the nicotine is added, shake the bottle. Manufacturers and XMania experts recommend doing it with effort for at least 50-60 seconds. This is needed to distribute the nicotine evenly.

That’s it, your shortfills are ready for vaping. There are two side notes, however, worth addressing. Some e-liquids should steep for a while. This helps flavours develop and is especially true to complex or dessert-like e-liquid flavours. If you’re a serial vaper, make sure to label your bottles with the dates and concentration to keep track on what’s where.

Shortfill vs Nic Salt | Comparison

The main differences are the possibility to personalise the concentration of nicotine, delivery of the nicotine with every puff and compatibility with your vaping device.

Shortfills are e-liquids free of nicotine. The goal is to add separate nic shots to make a strong liquid that is ready for vaping. Fully infused shortfill juice is mainly used by sub-ohm vaping devices by people who want more flavour and less nicotine.

On the other hand, nic salts are pre-mixed products with natural nicotine. It’s a ‘smoother hit’, as vapers say, and usually stronger compared to both premium and cheap shortfills.
